Uncanny X-Force issue #8 review
Everyone’s favorite ethnicity-changing psychic ninja Psylocke stars in the newest issue of Marvel’s Uncanny X-force. Over the last few years, the Fantomex-Psylocke relationship has gotten a tad bit complicated. After her lover Archangel was killed, Psylocke found comfort in the arms of master mutant thief Fantomex. Soon after, he was killed too. This lady has worse taste in men than Arlene from True Blood. Six months later, Fantomex had come back to life times three. Fantomex’s triple brain had been given three separate bodies. Fantomex kept the sentinel based abilities. Eva (his female spaceship symbiote) was given a human form, and she adopted the codename Cluster. The last of the three forms is Weapon XIII, who kidnapped Psylocke in the previous issue. Weapon XIII is the murderous dark half of Fantomex who also received all of his mutant misdirection powers.
It has been hammered into us since this book restarted its numbering that all three versions of Fantomex claim to still be in love with Psylocke. Many hints have been dropped that Psylocke rekindled a simultaneous sexual relationship with Fantomex and Cluster which has driven the dark Fantomex, Weapon XIII, mad with jealousy. In this issue not only do we get to see the dark Fantomex make his case for why Psylocke should seal the deal with the third version of her ex, but also we get to see all the gory details of her decent into bi-curiosity. I didn’t put a spoiler warning at the start of this review because nothing really happened in this issue except sex, kidnapping, and theft. Writer Sam Humphries has obviously been influenced by Garth Ennis’s style but by none of his creativity or wit.
If you are feeling a bit confused, you are not alone. Fantomex has been my favorite character in the X-books since he first appeared in Grant Morrison’s New X-men over a decade ago. I want to personally thank Sam Humphries for giving me the opportunity to find a new favorite X-character. Grant Morrison, if you care at all about the legacy of one of your best creations in Marvel Comics, call up the Marvel editorial staff and tell them this bullshit needs to come to an end. The artistic team is no better considering the features of Psylocke’s face literally changes from panel to panel. This issue is so bad that “TOSS IT” cannot even describe the repulsion that I experienced reading it. Stop promising us a team that includes Bishop, Puck, and Spiral but delivers cheesecake melodrama. I expect more from you, X-force.
