Tick, Tick…Boom! Movie Review by Brooke Daugherty

You might not know Jonathan Larson is, but you’ve heard of his biggest and last hit — RENT. Even for the uninitiated, music from RENT took the entire world by storm in the mid-nineties and has barely let up since. Tick, tick… BOOM is Larson’s autobiographical musical turned film with screenplay by Steven Levenson (Dear Evan Hansen) and directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton). Miranda executive produced the film, along with Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, and Julie Oh. If that isn’t enough names, the cast includes some famous faces and Broadway elites.
Tick, tick… BOOM is Lin-Manuel Miranda’s first foray in film directing and I hope to Oscar that he gets many more chances to finally win an Academy Award. If Miranda directs only musical adaptations, I wouldn’t be mad. I loved all the choices he made and everyone he had involved. As the kids say “Chef’s kiss”.
You may have seen the title, the lead actor listed as Andrew Garfield, and thought this was more of an action/adventure movie, the music may be jarring for you at first. Heck, even the sight of Andrew Garfield singing might throw you for a loop. Don’t let any of it keep you away from this film. Andrew Garfield doesn’t portray Larson, he BECOMES Larson. This is the BEST performance by Garfield I have ever seen. I was emotionally compromised by his performance and am willing to go throught it all again.
Alexandra Shipp is fantastic as Jonathan’s girlfriend Susan, completely redeeming herself for being part of an awful X-Men movie or two. She not only showcased her acting skills, but also her singing skills. Robin de Jesús being a veteran of Broadway performing in RENT as well as Miranda’s own In The Heights, deftly portrays Jonathan’s best friend Michael. Bradley Whitford shows up to do an uncanny imitation of Stephen Sondheim, with no singing on his part. Other famous faces include Vanessa Hudgens, Judith Light, Richard Kind, Bebe Neuwirth, Chita Rivera, Joel Grey, Phillipa Soo, Phylicia Rashad, and Bernadette Peters.
Even if you aren’t a fan of musicals, give this a shot on Netflix. It has all the emotional beats you need and SO MUCH talent.
