Steven Universe is the best cartoon I have seen since the first time I got acquainted with Finn and his shape shifting dog.  We are introduced in the opener “Gem Glow” to Steven Universe.  Steven is one of the four Gem Guardians, the son of the former leader of the Gem Guardians.  His teammates include:  Pearl – a pixie pedagogue who tries to mother Steven now that his is gone, Garnet – a bad, British mama who talks softly and carries a big fist, and Amethyst – a slothful smart aleck party girl and my unquestionably favorite character.  Unfortunately, Steven cannot figure out how to activate his abilities in any reliable way.  This lack of focus seems to come from his father’s side.  Mr. Universe is a burnt out former rocker who lives in his van.  It is unclear whether his father is having trouble coping with the death of Steven’s mother or if he was always just kind of a lovable loser.  If you are a fan of the X-men, you owe it to yourself to check out the premiere episodes from Monday night because they even included a “fastball special”.  The animation is not the draw of this new show but the goofy yet charming dialogue will keep me coming back for more.  I give the new Cartoon Network program Steven Universe a very emphatic Taste It.
