“Narcos: Mexico Season Two” Review by Brooke Daugherty

If you haven’t watched Season One of Narcos: Mexico, fire up Netflix and start your binge. This review will have a few spoilers to Season One. Once again, the season uses real footage mixed with fictional narratives to create a cross between a documentary and a dramatized account of events.
Season one had the introduction and exit of DEA agent Kiki Camarena (Michael Peña in a brilliantly played dramatic role) while season two continues to focus on Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo, still played wonderfully by Diego Luna. After his appearance in the season one finale, hon the always heard, rarely seen narrator Walt played by Scoot McNairy is center stage in season two. McNairy is great as a morally ambivalent DEA agent.
As with the other four seasons of the Narcos franchise, the cinematography is great at capturing the mood of each scene. I still love that Netflix gets not just latino actors, but writers and directors to work on this project. Although, everyone plays their parts well, sometimes the secondary characters more than the mains, I can’t help but feeling something is missing from this season. It has all the hallmarks of Narcos, but either I have drug violence fatigue or the 100% more white guy in the form of onscreen Scoot McNairy is bothering me. Having Latino actor Michael Peña playing a “good guy” – good and bad is pretty much irrelevant in this series – for me was better than the unknown secondary actors in Walt’s crew. After all that, I still believe it is a good series.
