“Making It” Season 2 Review by Brooke Daugherty

In 2017, NBC greenlit a crafting competition series produced and hosted by Poehler and Offerman that aired
in late summer 2018. That first season brought creativity and heart to the barren landscape of Tuesday
nights before regular series start. The main difference between Season 1 and 2, is Season 2 aired every
week night for two weeks of December 2019.
As with any competition show premise, crafters are pit against each other to win $100,000. Only this show
doesn’t have drama. It’s like “Great British Bake Off”, only in America and the macarons are made of felt.
Where GBBO can cause a bit of anxiety at times, “Making It” doesn’t have to rely on setting the oven to the
correct temperature.
This season, we were gifted with two more episodes and two more craftestants. Each week, crafters were
put to the test with a small project titled “Faster Craft” where the tasks such as decorating a blank wall,
designing couples costumes, or making a 3D invitation in 2 hours. The “Master Craft” is a larger, more
elaborate project-designing a mailbox, creating a home for an animal, and building a selfie backdrop for a
party. Each episode the crafters use both conventional and unusual materials for their projects with one
crafter eliminated at the end. Eliminated contestants join Amy and Nick talking for a vignette instead of going
home.
Amazing builds aside, the heart of this series is just that, heart. Everyone is friendly with each other with no
prodding production crew behind the scenes trying to start a fight. “Making It” doesn’t need drama. It is
presented by two caring and funny individuals who sincerely love handing out embroidered patches after
each competition. I regularly cry while watching this show just from the sheer niceness of everyone.
Contestants help each other when they are in need and support whoever wins a challenge. As artists, most
contestants speak of how art changed their lives or gave them a sense of belonging..
If you need an uplifting, feel good reality show, what “Making It”. If you didn’t watch Season 2 (or Season 1
for that matter), have no fear, all episodes are available on Hulu. It just might melt your cold heart like it did
mine. I seriously hope there is a Season 3.
