If you are into movies that depict complicated real life corporate scandals in a way that is easy to understand, with small doses of humor and empathy then you might want to skip “The Laundromat”.
Directed by Steven Soderbergh and written by Jake Bernstein and Scott Z. Burns, this film has all the ingredients for a delicious casserole. Unfortunately, some edges are over cooked and the middle is still pretty raw.
“The Laundromat” seeks to immerse the audience in the 2016 corporate scandal known as the “Panama Papers”. Ellen Martin (played by Meryl Streep) experiences a horrific tragedy that causes her to discover that the insurance policy she has been counting on is not what it seems. This leads her on a wild goose chase that includes shell companies, crooked business dealings and offshore accounts that leave those at the bottom holding a bag that is often empty.
With sub plots featuring well-known actors like Jeffrey Wright, David Schwimmer, and Sharon Stone, this film under utilizes its amazing talent in favor of a comedic angle that does not always land.
“The Laundromat” is awkwardly narrated by Ramon Fonseca (played by Antonio Banderas) and Jurgen Mossack (played by Gary Oldman). As they attempt to explain the complicated maze of deceit by rich businesses, attorneys and accountants explained in the leaked papers they also make failed attempts at humor that not only fall flat but will likely leave the audience with more questions about the scandal than before the film begins.
PCL Rating: Low Taste It
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: ROTTEN
