“John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch” Review by Stephanie Chapman

Directed by Rhys Thomas and written by John Mulaney and Marika Sawyer, this colorful show takes a new approach to sketch comedy that falls flat in the areas of delivery, humor and cohesion.
John Mulaney rounds out a talented cast of children, who perform sketches, sing, dance and discuss life’s curiosities. Throw in the occasional guest star and it should be a recipe for a unique and refreshing comedy special. However, what the audience receives is a jumbled mix of precocious kids, charming guest starts and sketches that although may have seemed great on paper, do not translate into an attention grabbing 50-minute comedy special.
It seems anxious to pull at the nostalgia many of us remember from shows like “Sesame Street”, “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood” and the “Electric Company”, however it lacks the warmth and innocence those shows offered. It instead tries to insert PG/PG-13 humor in a way that can only be described as a “swing and a miss”. Lack of cohesion is the final nail in the coffin of this special that unfortunately showed glimmers of promise but never delivered.
