“John Bronco” Movie Review by Brooke Daugherty

Hulu’s mockumentary, John Bronco, chronicles the rise and fall of celebrity pitchman John Bronco with archival clips and star studded memories. If you are wondering who this John Bronco is, you aren’t alone. Spoilers – He is imaginary. This short documentary uses archival footage to tell the story of Ford Motor Company’s pitchman and name sake of the Bronco.
John Bronco is directed by Jake Szymanski and written by Marc Gilbar. It was produced by Ron Howard and Brian Grazer’s company Imagine Entertainment, under the banner Imagine Documentaries. A perfect name for producing this mockumentary. Szymanski uses archival footage to add in Bronco Forrest Gump style as well as shoots new footage and ages it to fit the time period.
Walton Goggins uses every ounce of charisma in his wiry frame to create an endearing character while still lampooning ‘70s ultra macho spokesmen. At 38 minutes, they pack in a lot of fake information, but Goggins’ portrayal keeps the wheels spinning on this Bronco. There are actors playing roles and celebrities playing themselves, but not knowing who will show up is part of the fun.
I cannot decide if it is the most epic commercial I’ve seen or the best use of product placement in 38 minutes of film. Either way, if you’ve got half an hour to spare, watch it. I enjoyed it and the few laughs but give it a high High Taste It for the bits that go on too long.
