Helix review

(SPOILER ALERT) Syfy’s new program Helix stars Billy Campbell as the work obsessed Dr. Alan Farragut who leads a CDC team to a remote research facility known as Arctic Biosystems. He is heading the team not only because it is his job but because his brother Peter played by Neil Napier is one of the victims of the outbreak at the facility. Farragut’s team includes his ex-wife, Dr. Julia Walker, played with great nuance by Kyra Zagorsky. She has a very complicated history with the Farragut brothers which culminates in her infection in episode two.
Dr. Walker’s reaction to her infection in episode three was the performance that actually started to turn me around on this series. There is nothing very original about this show. If you are a gamer, Bioshock plus Resident Evil equals Helix. The score is a direct transplant from Bioshock as is Hiroyuki Sanada’s Dr. Hiroshi Sanada. Dr. Sanada is the man in charge of the remote polar research station. His soothing tones and willingness to accommodate is very reminiscent of the main bad guy from Bioshock including his own mutated surprises to come. Catherine Lemieux plays Dr. Doreen Boyle with an empathic yet sarcastic enthusiasm. For the life of me, I cannot understand why Jordan Hayes’ Dr. Sarah Jordan gets as much screen time as she does. She has one facial expression and could not act her way out of a paper bag.
The strongest aspect that gives me hope for this show is that Ronald D. Moore is writing it. When I heard “frack” on TV for the first time in years, it was like hearing my Cubs got into the playoffs. I am giving Helix a very hopeful Taste It. Don’t let me done Mr. Moore.
