Honorable Mentions
So, after five main games I’m excited to find out about this show, there’s still a ton of games that will be revealed again or for the first time. I’ve picked another 12.
Abzu (PS4/ PC)
From the art director and composer of Journey, comes a gorgeous underwater simulator focusing on exploration and communication, which is bound to relax and enchant in equal measure.
Battlefield 1 (multi)
With the annualized (although developed by three different studios on a yearly rotation) call of duty: infinite warfare going super space SCI FI, the battlefield entry this year goes back to WWI. After a game like valiant hearts, maybe this could be a chance to combine epic warfare the series is known for, as well as an intimate, personal and emotional story.
Cuphead (Xbox one)
This is a hard as nails, charming as hell and bat shit crazy side scrolling platformer taken straight from the turbo charged omissions from a 1930s Steamboat Willie short. And it’s glorious.
Final Fantasy VII remake (PS4)
As contentious and intriguing as it is anticipated, conflicting reports of a staggered, episodic and multi genre remake of a game that introduced mainstream audiences to the series, and in 3D. The dury will be out in force.
Final fantasy XV (multi)
In stark contrast to the remake, XV has been showered in praise since its demo and will be released on September 30th. By all accounts, it’s a fresh, modern take, but a return to form.
Gears of war 4 (Xbox one)
The tent pole Xbox one burly man shooting things franchise will continue, without cliffy B. Whether the game will revitalize the Xbox one fortunes remains to be seen, but along with Forza and Halo, it’s the exclusive that needs to shift consoles come October.
Horizon- Zero Dawn (PS4)
I hope that with this and ark- survival evolved, 2016 will do for dinosaurs what the last 10 years did for zombies. The creatures look like magnificent and unique hybrids, the world lush, and the RPG systems meaty. Can I still hope for a new Dino crisis game while I’m here…?!
No Mans Sky (PS4/ PC)
At the time of writing, both a Kotaku journalist and the games creator have received death threats for the games delay until August. Not only is this unacceptable, but there has never been a game this ambitious in scope or concept, especially since the size of the team is a relatively minuscule 15.
Telltale Batman game (multi)
After the last two entries in the Arkham series having arguably like warm receptions (especially the PC version of knight…) the telltale game has the precarious task of adapting it’s gameplay style that has been used for an increasing number of franchises, and making it fit in the world of the caped crusader. Interesting, and would fit into a Year one or killing joke type setting pretty well.
Titanfall 2 (multi)
As impressive and fun as the first Titanfall was, it didn’t have the gas in the content department to warrant the system seller moniker Microsoft were hoping. On stage will be a multi platform sequel with a campaign mode and full reveal should be a belter.
What remains of Edith Finch.
The curiously titled second PlayStation exclusive from Giant Sparrow, the studio that made the charming interactive story book called the unfinished swan. The similarly monochrome art style will tell a series of short stories spanning 100 years and from the perspective of different family members.
Yooka Laylee (multi)
The most successful Kickstarter game ever from former Rare devs keen to see a renaissance in the mascot platform genre. Coming from talent that made Banjo Kazooie and concept art that looks like a rainbow threw up on Disneyland, I have no doubt it will be a charming and welcome edition to any console.
