Journalist Latif Nasser hosts Connected: The Hidden Science of EverythiREving, a six part docu-series on Netflix, that is exactly what it sounds like. You might not recognize Nasser’s name or face, but if you have listened to the podcast Radiolab, there’s a good chance you’ve heard his voice. He is the Director of Research at WNYC, making him a perfect Executive Producer for Connected. His enthusiasm and quest for knowledge of the subjects endears him to the audience, making him a perfect host.
Topics covered are Surveillance, Poop, Dust, Digits, Clouds, and Nukes. These episodes seemingly cover much more than first glance of the titles. The Surveillance episode not only covers CCTV and facial recognition software, but tracking animals and baby monitors. It also shows how facial recognition software can be used to figure out the mood of farm animals to help their quality of life. He connects all these to dating apps mining your information.
My favorite episode was about numbers. Nasser visits a Benford’s Law conference to find out how this idea can find fraud and make predictions. Check out an episode that speaks to you. If you enjoy it, you will appreciate all the episodes.
