“City of Ghosts” Netflix Review by Brooke Daugherty

Elizabeth Ito’s City of Ghosts is about the Ghost Club of five Los Angeles children who hunt for ghosts around the city but is still suitable for children and just as fun for adults. The animation style looks to be a collage of 2D and 3D animation on top of scenes of real Los Angeles sites drawn on top. At least one episode has actual photographs of the “ghost” the club meets.
In this series, the ghosts are a plot device to tie Los Angeles’ past to its present. The ghost’s stories are real, but not all the ghost stories are real. Each episode covers different neighborhoods and cultures in the melting pot that is Los Angeles. The kids learn about everything from Native American place names to Japanese internment camps.
The voice acting is so real like each person and ghost are being interviewed in real time by these children. This aspect helps to keep the real stories from real Los Angeles residents stay tied to real life. Netflix could have cast some of their stars to really push this series, but instead used mostly unknowns. A few are somewhat know like Adam Muto, showrunner of Adventure time, photographer/surfer/skater Josh ‘Bagel’ Klassman, and my personal favorite “Atomic” Nancy Sekizawa who is a LA punk icon.
If you need a couple 20 minutes or a couple hours of wholesomeness or something you will enjoy as much as your kids, watch City of Ghosts on Netflix. It made me so happy to see so many diverse stories in a place that has become my second home.
