“Call Me Kat” TV Review by Stephanie Chapman

Sometimes a sitcom comes along that doesn’t require much mental bandwidth. Sometimes you just want to sit down, turn your brain off for 30 min and watch a show that won’t make you cry, contemplate your own life choices or make you worry that you’ve wasted your time watching it. If that sounds appealing to you, then “Call Me Kat” might be just what the doctor ordered.
Laugh tracks and physical gags aren’t as common as they used to be, but “Call Me Kat” doesn’t care and there are an abundance on display in its premiere season. Mayim Bialik stars as “Kat” a 39 year old single woman who decides to quit her corporate job to open a cat café’. She is close friends with her employees (Leslie Jordan who plays Phil, and Kyla Pratt who plays Randi). Her crush works at a nearby bar (played by Cheyenne Jackson) and her mother (played by Swoosie Kurtz), never takes a day off from meddling. “Kat” is endearing and is living the life she wants as her own boss while her personal life flounders.
Created by Darlene Hunt and executive produced by Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik, “Call Me Kat” is based off of the popular BBC show “Miranda”. Audiences will find some of the jokes funny and they also might find themselves wincing at cheesy attempts at humor that seem to miss the mark.
Audiences should temper their expectations. If you saw the trailer then your assumptions are probably correct. If you haven’t, please don’t set them too high. It won’t disappoint, but it won’t exceed expectations either and who says it should? Canned laughter and a few physical gags never hurt anyone and if you have time to turn your brain off for 30 min to watch a feel good, moderately acted and executed show then this is a great choice.
