“The World According to Jeff Goldblum” Episode 2 Ice Cream
December 3, 2019 6:29 am |
We find Goldblum in an ice cream shop pontificating about the sweet, creamy substance. On his quest to find out more about ice cream, he hitches a ride with Deanna Davis from Fat Daddy’s Ice Cream truck in Las Vegas. He gleefully talks about the sweet stuff and guesses the jingles as they make their was to Nostalgia Fest. Davis is a veritable ice cream anthropologist, comparing people’s personalities to types of ice cream they will buy.
After a quick ancestral history of ice cream, Goldblum heads to Vermont to catch up with the real life Ben (Cohen) and Jerry(Greenfield) for some secrets to their success, and of course, to taste some of their flavors. He even visits the Favor Graveyard. We get some of the epitaphs brought to life by Goldblum himself, as he reads them in his enthusiasm and unusual cadence.
Next up, he visits Salt and Straw, an ice cream shop in Portland founded by Tyler Malek, that doesn’t shy away from using unconventional flavors such as corn, olive oil, and goat cheese. The pair meet up at the Flavor Laboratory where Malek shoes Goldblum concoctions containing ingredients like bone marrow, mealworms, and crickets. One in particular is a Halloween themed “Dracula’s Blood” that contains pigs blood, chicken livers, brandy, and spices. Then they proceed to make Goldblum his own flavor, aptly named “Goldblum”, from oxalis and various other plants they gathered from a forest in the Pacific Northwest.
Finally, Goldblum takes his freshly created dessert to troops on board the USS America. The aircraft carrier is no stranger to ice cream–the crew has held up the Navy’s tradition of onboard ice cream socials. He personally takes bowls of his ice cream to the awaiting troops. Here is where the best part of the episode happens; he requests the sailors to close their eyes as they test the new creamy blend. Each one described tender memories, mostly from childhood, derived from the taste of the “Goldblum” ice cream.
Once again, this episode is absolutely entertaining and informative as well as crave inducing. This series can be watched in any order, so go ahead and watch this one first. Luckily for us all, the run time is around half an hour. Conversely, only thirty minutes of Goldblum is not enough. Another Tupperware all the way.
