“Terminator: Dark Fate” Review by Quinton Roberts

The Terminator franchise is another franchise to take out certain movies as cannon, just as Halloween did last year. This film is now acting as the third film in a trilogy of films with The Terminator, T2: Judgement Day and Terminator: Dark Fate. As a fan of the first two, I was excited but skeptical on if this film would deliver after three films that didn’t have the same impact as the first two. Did Terminator: Dark Fate have a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy?
The answer is no. Dark Fate fell short of expectations. It made bold decisions, but executed poorly and it follows many of the same storylines as the first one which seems silly for it to be considered a continuation. It was great to see returning characters such as Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) and T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger) but what they were given in this film was not worth the wait. Newcomers were Grace (Mackenzie Davis) and Dani Ramos (Natalia Reyes), and they both were fine in leading the film. I have enjoyed Mackenzie Davis in many other projects and this felt new and exciting seeing her in an action role. I would give her performance a high taste it, but everyone around her seemed so flat.
The antagonist of the film is a new Terminator called a REV-9 (Gabriel Luna) and when he is introduced, I know that I’ve seen this film before. It’s a combination of both films done previously, but with a Hispanic overtone. The fight scenes were gloriously shot and the CGI felt more real than the previous installments, but it overall didn’t save the film from its dull plot. Skynet is now Legion and that is a rehash from what was previously done. The Terminator franchise can’t escape from impending doom from a larger evil as the main set piece for its films.
Would I recommend seeing this film? No, I think that the two important films to watch in the franchise are the first two and then skip everything else. Sarah Connor defeated Skynet in T2 and that is as satisfying as a conclusion needs to be.
PCL Rating: Low Taste It
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: ROTTEN
