“Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” Review by Brooke Daugherty

The Rise of Skywalker had the arduous task to tie up loose ends not just for its two predecessors, but
the entire Skywalker Saga. For the most part, JJ Abrams fulfills this task. His second effort writing and
directing a Star Wars episode was a bit of a roller coaster ride–both in emotional and story beats.
Overall, this film looks and sounds beautiful and wraps up previous storylines with old characters while
simultaneously introducing new characters. One new character in particular, Babu Frik, seems to have
become the internet’s new darling, check out #BabuFrik on the socials and you’ll see what I mean. As
always, John Williams’ music is amazing. His final score for Lucasfilm is pure Star Wars plus be on the
lookout for a cameo by Williams himself in the film. Although prior plot points are wrapped up, several
avenues were opened for new stories outside of the Skywalker story.
Personally, I don’t need every single question answered especially if new material creates more that go
unanswered. The fan service in this movie will either wow you or annoy you. Most, for me, were hits with
a couple misses, but some fans seem to think Abrams folded with respect to The Last Jedi fan outcry. It
was as if Abrams took notes on what the fandom was talking (or complaining) about to try to address.
I’m not sure if that was the case, he might have wanted to expand on what he had done before.
My main problem was the scarcity of traditional Star Wars scene transitions. The Last Jedi had under
20, but I only noticed 2 in The Rise of Skywalker. Not that we need a transition between every single
scene *cough* Revenge of the Sith has over 100 *cough*. The other nitpicks I had with this movie are
too spoilery to mention.
Although it had some weak points, I thoroughly enjoyed The Rise of Skywalker and plan on seeing it
yet again.
PCL Rating: High Taste It
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: FRESH 🍅
