Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Review by Brooke Daugherty (Paramount+)

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds follows the Enterprise crew lead by Christopher Pike as seen in Star Trek: Discovery Season 2. Don’t be fooled into thinking this is just Disco with new packaging. Strange New Worlds holds its own as a story of the week show amidst other shows with season story arcs – Discovery and Picard included.
As in Discovery, we have Anson Mount as Christopher Pike, Ethan Peck as Spock, and Rebecca Romijn as First Officer Una Chin-Riley. Other players include Jess Bush as Nurse Christine Chapel, Christina Chong as Security Officer La’an Noonien-Singh, Celia Rose Gooding as Cadet Nyota Uhura, Melissa Navia as Helmsman Erica Ortegas, Babs Olusanmokun as Dr. M’Benga, and Bruce Horak as Chief Hemmer. Look at this cast. We get a bridge FULL of women working alongside Pike and Spock. It warmed my cold little heart.
A Trek tradition is to show diversity. Not only are there plenty of capable female/female presenting officers, we also have People of Color in all stations. This is one of the things LOVE about every iteration of Star Trek. It looks like real life – with aliens. Disco has a non-binary actor playing a non-binary character while SNW has a blind actor playing a blind character. Grumpy Chief Engineer Hemmer is an Aenar and they have little to no vision and Albinism. Not everyone realizes Albinism and visual impairment go hand in hand, so that bit of representation is great.
Strange New Worlds feels like Trek. No matter if you like new Star Trek or original Star Trek. Strange New Worlds seamlessly weaves old and new together. We get a story of the week format, but we are also introduced to this cast of characters who are all likable yet different from one another. Subscribe to Paramount+ if only for this show. You won’t be sorry.
