Spider-Verse Review

The Spider-Verse event is written and overseen by writer Dan Slott. There are also many other writers that took the task of writing many of the little anthology Spider stories and creating new Spider-Heroes that hail from different universes. Each one was plucked from the many past and future (2099) pages of Spider-Man comics, along with a healthy handful of ALL NEW Spider Characters!
Spider-Verse begins right where Superior Spider-Man #31 left off. Peter Parker has just taken back control is his mind and body from the devious Doctor Octopus in Amazing Spider-Man #1. Crazy right!? Well that’s a whole other story.
Peter is back! Better than ever and now facing all kinds of new problems after returning back to the world as your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man! He has a girlfriend that he never new he had, (Thanks to Doc Ock) a new Doctorate Degree, and a whole damn company named after him, Parker Industries. His aunt May has a new hip and MJ is dating a fire fighter! Life for Peter has always been rough, but coming back to his life is like a rebirth.
All that aside, Peter has been coping as he faces an old friend and flame turned Super Villain, The Black Cat, who is trying to be the next Super Crime Lord of Manhattan. She has been holding a grudge over what the Doc Ock Superior Spider-Man did to her back in his comic series.
During this little event called Original Sin, Spider-Man learned a secret that was hidden from him since that fateful day in the lab where his life was forever changed. As it turns out, there was another person that was bit by the same spider Peter was bitten by. Her name is Cindy Mood, and Peter had to find her! Once he did, Peter found her caged and hidden away for many years, kept safe from one of Spider-Man’s most dangerous nemeses he’s ever faced, Morlun.
…. Wait!? Didn’t Spider-Man KILL Morlun???? Dun Dun Duuuuhhhhhhh!!!
WOW that was a long intro! Well this is good shit though, right? SO MUCH MORE!!! And I’m gonna make it really simple here. Form here on out everything about Spider-Verse is going to be as paraphrased as possible. Or else this review will be 19 3/7 pages long. There is so much story here, so please bear with this article. Strap in and absorb all it’s glorious simplicity.
Once Spider-Man released Cindy Moon from her captivity (Old dead spider pal, Ezekiel nabbed Cindy and hid her and her “Spider Sent” from Morlun) he found that it was a very very bad idea. Once out in the open world, Cindy Moon was finally able to be just like Spider-Man. With all of his powers and bit more. (Organic webs form her finger tips, stronger and faster than Peter, and not to mention much much hornier once they’re together spitting them nasty spider pheromones) Cindy was having a great time with Peter (Sex). What Peter didn’t know was that Cindy Moon was locked up for a reason, and now that she’s out, Morlun has found her scent!
Cindy Moon later took the name, Silk. She begin to fight along side Spider-Man, protecting her secret identity as Cindy Moon by wearing a cool new costume.
Morlun is a member of a family from Universe 001. They are called Inheritors. They feed off of the avatar of the Spider Totems from countless universes. The Master Weaver, a spider like God creature from universe 000 was captured by The Inheritors in Superior Spider-Man #33. This steampunkish half man-spider is able to weave the webs of every Spider-Universe and teleport the family of the Inheritors to any universe to feed on those spiders.
One brother of the Inheritors family, named Karn was shamed and banished by the family. They trapped him much like the man in The Iron Mask, casing his head in a divers helmet of sorts. In this humiliating form, Karn is an angry Inheritor who is out to prove to his family that he can be just as evil as them, and show them that he is worth of being one of them.
Karn has since gone missing after his fight with Spider-Man Noir of 1939 New York, Universe-90214. These events took place in the first issue of Edge of Spider-Verse.
In the pages of Superior Spider-Man #32 we follow Superior Spider-Man as he travels through the year 2099 to collect data and technology to help fight against these “demons”, as he calls them in his first meeting with Karn. Superior Spider-Man is on the hunt. With his new-found tech, he has been universe hopping in search of his spider army. He’s as many spiders as he can find to help him in the coming war. By the end of this issue, Superior Spider-Man he has witnessed so much death form many of the universes that have already been razed by the Inheritors. Superior Spider-Man has grown on his side, ready to plan for a fight as well as their survival.
Edge of Spider-Verse
The events of the Edge of Spider-Verse mini series are a series of five anthology stories featuring different spider-heroes from around the multiverse. We get to meet Spider-Man Noir once again, and the last pages of the redemption fueled Karn Inheritor. Spider-Gwen first appeared with her fantastic twist on the spider mythos, followed by Aaron Aikman Spider-Man, a molecular biologist imbued with re-sequenced human/spider DNA. The fourth issue of Edge of Spider-Verse gave us a glimpse of a universe much more tragic and horrific. This story takes us through the torturous life of Patton Parnel. A troubled boy who is beaten by his uncle on the regular and a peeping tom to Sara Jane across the yard. This one doesn’t end pretty. The final introduction in the series is in the style of Japanese manga/anime featuring an Evangelion type super robot that the city calls SP//dr. Every single one of these stories are a fresh and exciting take on different spider origins that are completely individual and original. Great reads for sure. Especially Spider-Gwen!
Through the next few issues of Spider-Man 2099, Amazing Spider-Man, and the Spider-Verse mini, the Inheritors family have been hunting, and eating. Earth 616 Spider-Man (Our original Peter Parker) has joined the fight along side Silk, Spider-Man 2099, Spider Woman, Spider-Girl, and many other. Their army has grown after joining spider groups with the Superior Spider-Man’s. The collective spider teams found a safe haven in Earth-13. This universe Earth somehow has a block on the Inheritors and they can’t sense them here. It is also the home of the UK Spider-Man; the spider that is part of the multiversal wide team called the Captain Britain Corps.
After the the collective spiders’ gathering in the Safe Zone, teams have been made. Groups of specific spiders are gathered to go through the universe web using the Superior Spider-Man’s tech to take an offensive strike against Morlun and his family, as well as pick up more spiders on the way to join in on the action.
On the other side of the spectrum in Loomworld on Earth-001, the Inheritor family are on the look out for more spider-food and also, to capture the three most special spiders of all. All the readers know at this point is that these spider teams must stay apart as to not get these three special spiders caught in the same place. The spiders are named as such: Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Earth 616) – The Scion, Scarlet Spider (Clone Spider – Kain of Earth 616) – The Anomaly, and Silk (Earth 616) – The Bride. This spider triangle will come to mean much more in the coming issues of the Spider-Verse event. There isn’t much we know about the titles that the Inheritors have given them, other than the Scarlet Spider being the only surviving and healthy clone of Peter Parker. The Inheritors want them and they will do anything to get them. No man, woman, or child of ANY universe is safe as long as this family is hungry for Spider totems.
These actions have spawned a couple new series called Spider Woman, and Scarlet Spiders.
Below is a link providing all the Fallen Spiders of Spider-Verse so far. This past week of comics was Spider-Verse free, so it’s a good time to catch up. It’s completely understandable that readers can be tired of these multiple titled tie-in event series, but this one is by far the best for a single mainstream character such as Spider-Man. It’s huge, and nothing like the many crazy crossover tie-in’s that we’ve seen with the Avengers and X-men. Taking Spider-Man to this level of crossover has been an amazing ride so far. If you are interested in Spider-Man at all, this is an event you MUST read. It not only will change your views on the many different spiders, but also introduce you to some of the coolest Spider-People to ever appear in the pages of comics. (Spider-Gwen, Spider-Punk, Superior Spider-Man, [even though he’s been around for over a year, he’s finally back and I hope we get more of him] and Spider-Ham!) They are all really original and wonderfully written and also drawn.

In the issues to come, we will finally get to see the second half of the Spider-Verse tie-in event. Who will die!? Who will survive!? How will the Inheritors be defeated?? If they can be defeated at all…. How will it all end???
