She-Hulk: Attorney At Law TV Review by Brooke Daugherty

Jessica Gao, who wrote “Pickle Rick” which is arguably the best episode of “Rick and Morty”, created She-Hulk: Attorney at Law for Disney+. As well as adapting the comic for the small screen, Gao wrote three episodes. If they are as enjoyable as the first, I will be the newest fan of She-Hulk. Another point of excitement for me is the series is directed by two women who split up directing duties – Kat Coiro (Shameless, Modern Family) and Anu Valia (Mixed-ish, Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens)
The series stars Tatiana Maslany as Jennifer Walters and She-Hulk, her paralegal and friend Nikki Ramos played by Ginger Gonzaga. In the first episode, we get a quick recap of how Jen becomes She-Hulk with Mark Ruffalo reprising his role as her cousin Bruce Banner AKA Hulk. We also get a glimpse of Jameela Jamil as Titania, although we don’t really get much about her.
This series isn’t serious. If you are looking for a gritty, Daredevil/Netflix style show, you are not getting it here. Even when *mild spoilers* Daredevil/Matt Murdock apparently shows up later in the season. This series has more of a Deadpool feel, with fourth wall breaking included – which Jen Walters did a couple years before Deadpool even existed. Although her backstory has changed, the feel of “Sensational She-Hulk” series written by John Byrne in the late 80s/early 90s is totally there.
This first episode shows you can do other superheroes with tongue planted firmly in cheek. Personally, I hope there is more of the fourth wall and rule breaking in this series. If Jen doesn’t directly address Gao at some point, I might have some disappointment in the series. As for the hulk in the room, yes, some of the CGI is a bit clunky, but I honestly don’t care because I really enjoy the lighter, playful feel of this series.
