Get prepared for a spunky take on horror with “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark”. Based off of Alvin Schwartz’s popular children’s books series of the same name and directed by Andre Ovredal, screenplay by Dan Hageman, Kevin Hageman and Guillermo del Toro. This film reaches into its PG 13 rating to provide the audience with picture perfect adaptations of the monsters described in the famous book series.
Zoe Margaret Colletti plays “Stella” who is an outcast teenage writer being raised by her father. Her friends “Auggie” (played by Gabriel Rush) and “Chuck” (played by Austin Zajur) are her 2 best friends, who provide comic relief and nudges towards adventure and reason. They are joined by “Ramon” (played by Michael Garza), an out of town traveler who is getting more from this small town than he bargained for. The film really takes flight when they begin to navigate the legend of a haunted house and a mysterious book all while trying to survive a sequence of unexplainable horrors.
Very loosely based on the book series, audiences familiar with the books might be disappointed that the tales are not fully reimagined on the big screen. However, they will be pleased with both the practical effects and CGI used to bring these horrors to life.
Prepare to be entertained! “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” is a refreshing take on a popular book series that filled many childhoods with unforgettable fright!
