If you want something to put on in the background while you clean, turn on Red Sea Diving Resort. The soundtrack will alert you to which scenes to watch.
If someone had told me I would want LESS Chris Evans in a movie, especially him working out and in various stages of nudity, I would have laughed in their face. While the story which inspired this film is an inspiring and exciting one, most of it was lost in this clunky, lengthy rendition. If you want something on Netflix to put on while you clean, turn on Red Sea Diving Resort. The soundtrack will alert you to which scenes to watch. Some spoilers ahead.
The film follows the story of Israeli Mossad agents evacuating Ethopian Jews from Sudan through a fake resort. A story about taking thousands of refugees out of camps and transporting them across the Red Sea to Israel is interesting, but so many parts of this film fall short. Some critics are calling out the “white savior” trope, but that seems to be the least of its problems.
Evans’ character seems to be a combination of Steve Rogers and the actual agents involved in the story. He is constantly running, doing push-ups, and/or showing off gratuitous skin. Yes, I said it, I saw too much of “sexy Evans” in this movie. It was as if the filmmakers wanted to make Ari Levinson some kind of superhero. He wasn’t a one man army coordinating everything and being the only brains of the operation. The Mossad worked with the Ethiopian contacts on many aspects of the real operation. I guess we should chalk it up to “dramatic license”.
Evans’ performance was good once you get passed the other problems. The supporting cast were all great. Some of the best interactions were the other agents scenes with each other and the hotel guests. In fact, Greg Kinnear and Ben Kingsley make supporting appearances, but neither one of them can help this film. All the refugee scenes are well done, showing their awful living conditions and the dangerous trips to freedom. However, some of the agent scenes are set to synthy eighties songs that do not fit the tone of the rest of the film or the story. Here’s where you can go off and get your clothes out of the wash. There are even montages of Evans exercising and the other agents entertaining the guests who showed up at the resort although the plan didn’t include real guests.
The film has potential, but it is buried under Evans character being written as “the man with the plan”, besides him being obviously of European descent and playing an Isreali. One scene even alludes one agent has fallen for another with no pay off, not that I’d want that subplot in this type of movie. This film would be much better with many scenes taken out. If I had the skills, I’d re-edit this movie so it’s not so clunky. If anyone just wants “sexy Evans”, I can send you the time stamps. Otherwise watch at your discretion.
