Men In Black International Review by Michael Winkler

F. Gary Gray gets behind the camera for the fourth installment of the Men In Black franchise in “Men In Black: International”. Gray is most notably known for his directorial work on “Straight Outta Compton” and “The Fate of the Furious”. MIB has such a rich history in cinema, that this should’ve been an easy A for the popular director. MIB: International follows Agent M. (Tessa Thompson) and Agent H. (Chris Hemsworth) who are trying to find a mole within the ranks of the Men In Black. Thompson and Hemsworth share contagious energy that any viewer must appreciate. What this film lacks in storytelling and overall structure, it makes up for with quality acting and stunning visual effects.
MIB: International is well directed. This film utilizes the chemistry that Thompson and Hemsworth carry over from their work together in previous films. (Thor Ragnarok, Avengers: End Game). Thompson does a great job in leading the dynamic duo. There is a supporting cast that needs mentioning as well. Liam Neeson and Emma Thompson both have strong supporting roles as Agent High T and Agent O. While the acting was top tier, a lot of the dialogue and jokes fell flat. After seeing both Hemsworth and Thompson land humor in other films, bad writing and poorly timed jokes can attest to the lackluster comedic notes. Hemsworth was just “OK”. He had every opportunity to steal the show and left way too much to be desired. There is, however, a character in “Pawny” that proves there are capable comedic writers on the staff. Pawny (voiced by Kumail Nanjiani) joins Agents M and H on their travels. This new addition to the team adds a lighthearted tone to the film and loads of laughs.
After finding out from an alien confident that there may be a mole within the ranks of the MIB, Agents H and M find themselves in a variety of scenarios ranging from casual encounters with aliens to high-speed adrenaline filled vehicle chases. MIB films are most known for their high-octane action sequences and outstanding visual effects. MIB International does not disappoint when it comes to these categories. Where the film is very strong in its action and visuals, it lacks in the storyline, comedic timing, and character development. A pair of twins star in this film as two aliens sent to earth to retrieve an item of high value. The pair made for some fun and quirky situations but was a let down to the story as a whole.
Men In Black: International does not feel like it is better or worse than any of the other MIB movies. It is just another addition to the franchise. While this might seem like a let down to a lot of viewers, there are some positives to take away from this film. Tessa Thompson holds her own as the leading lady and has the potential to make big strides in the movie industry in the upcoming years. Kumail Nanjiani steals the show with what could be the best role in the film in “Pawny”. With amazing comedic timing and a voice made for Hollywood, the sky is the limit for the up and coming talent. What MIB: International lacks in the storyline and comedic timing, it makes up for with great visuals and quality acting. If the Men In Black franchise is attempting a resurrection, it may be best if Hemsworth leaves his suit at the cleaners.
