A Female THOR & A New Captain America!? Whaaaaaaaaat!?!?!
By now we’ve all heard about the incredible news of the new Thor and the new Captain America. Oh, you haven’t, you say? Well how about busting out of that pop culture vacuum you’ve been sucked into and get with the times.
On Tuesday July 15th, ABC’s The View announced that there will be a female taking over the role of Thor in Jason Aaron’s current and outstanding run on Thor: God of Thunder, some time in October. The co-stars on The View were vaguely discussing this new development for Marvel as they were mostly pandering to women, which achieved that typical applause you get from pandered women’s programing. However, this is a huge deal to cheer about, The View didn’t care to give it the true attention this character that is Thor, is rightfully deserved.
It would have been nice if both Marvel and The View has made an agreement to actually have a guest such as Jason Aaron or Joe Quesada to appear and tell the audience about the change to the character, along with the what’s and why’s of this universal, groundbreaking, and unprecedented debut of the new Thor. Alas, the whole cast of The View took a little over two minutes to pander to the ladies and take one of the most popular characters in comics as well as cinemas into a simple minded conversation about her physical appearance.
Aside from what The View lacked in discussing, this is a monumental change to the character. Currently, there isn’t word on who will be donning the costume and holding the hammer that is Mjolnir, but there are speculations. Three characters come to mind though, and they are probably the most popular of the many choices for who the new Thor could be. Angela, who is the newest addition to Marvel Comics: she is currently in the Guardians of the Galaxy ongoing series as a new member of the team along with Venom and Captain Marvel.
**SPOILERS**
There’s been something fishy going on in this years event, Original Sin that brings up the fact that Angela may in fact be Thor’s sister, and that she had been trapped and now escaped from the dreaded Tenth Realm that housed angels which were banished by Odin millennia ago. It’s been said that somehow Thor will no longer be worthy of the hammer, “Mjolnir” and the next person in line who is worthy will gain the power of Thor. (As the hammer’s quote states) Second in line could be Thors very own female counterpart and sometimes lover, Valkyrie. This one seems unlikely, but who knows? It definitely couldn’t be as farfetched as Thor’s old girlfriend, and the final pick to wield the hammer, Jane Foster. Her name has been floating around ever since this story was hot off the presses. This is the most unlikely choice seeing that in recent issues of Jason Aaron’s run on Thor: God of Thunder, Jane has a bad case of cancer and has denied Thor many times for any mystical or magical help/cures from Asgard. It would completely contradict her character’s motives in the past 4-6 issues if she just up and decided and or chosen to be the new Thor. Plus, if you havev’t read the last issue, she just went up to Asgard to be the Human liaison/diplomat on Midgard”s behalf. Sure is looking like Angela will be spinning the hammer and raining lightning down to zap some bad guys this October.
In addition, his new Thor will not be renamed or called anything but “Thor”. She is strictly taking over the mantel and powers to become the hero. The character will appear in the continuation of the current Jason Aaron run this Fall with art by Russell Dauterman, and she will also be apart of the new Avengers line up that will begin as yet another #1 in the “All-New” Marvel line. Check for it!
But wait, there has been more super secret Avengers news that came just one days later on the Colbert Report on Wednesday, July 16th. This time they got it right as Stephen Colbert had recurring guest, and friend to the show, Marvel’s own Editor in Chief and Chief Creative Officer of Marvel Entertainment, Joe Quesada, to talk about the new and very different Captain America. Go see the interview here to see what’s up.
If you’ve been following along with the current Captain America comics issue #21, Captain America was in a battle with The Iron Nail in his monster form. With his red spike like testicles, The Iron Nail stabbed the good Caption in the back, sapping him of his super serum and 65 years year which rapidly aged him to a wrinkly old man with no power. From the recent headlines and images I’m sure most of you geeks have seen floating around, it looks like Sam Wilson, aka The Falcon will be taking over as Captain America this Fall. Sam Wilson has been the Falcon for almost as long as Captain America, give or take 27 years. He appeared in Captain America #117 in 1969 and has been Steve Rogers’ most trusted and closest friends to date. It seems only fitting that Mr. Wilson would finally get to hoist the rare vibranium shield and start boomeranging it at thugs. We’ve already seen the Punisher, US Agent, Bucky Barnes (The Winter Soldier) and a couple others take over as Cap. It’s the perfect time to try some new blood.
Now most of you may think, “A black guy as Captain America!?” or how Colbert jokingly put it, “Wouldn’t he be called Captain African America?”.
NO! BULLSHIT! RACIST! Stop that crap right here and now! To those other ads and news sources with the titles “Black Captain America”, or other like that labeling Sam Wilson, you suck, and you’re all racist pricks! This in no way should EVER be about color or race. We geeks don’t go around calling Steve Rogers the “White Captain America”. We all just take it how it is and call him “Captain America”, and so should the rest of the geek and comic community call this new Cap, Sam Wilson, “Captain America”. This is what he is and how it should be. No labels are needed.
Sam Wilson is a great character and will be a fantastic Captain America. Rick Remender and Stuart Immonen will be teaming up for the new chapter of Captain America in All-New Captain America #1 coming this Fall. Check for it!

***Correction and new development to my article posted above***
In my article linked above, I brought up the talk and speculation of who the new Thor’s alter ego might actually be. My initial ideas of who this new Thor could be, as my article states, were that it most likely would or could be Angela. Clearly I hadn’t seen the new Avengers line-up picture before my article was completed. Haha. As you can see in the picture above, Angela is standing RIGHT next to the new female Thor!!! How could anyone miss this. For that I truly and peacefully apologize.
Now begs the ultimate question, WHO THE “F” IS THE NEW THOR!?!? let’s speculate below, shall we? What do you guys think??
