Due to COVID-19, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga did not make it to theaters in May as originally scheduled. Instead it headed to Netflix. Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams play an Icelandic musical duo with aspirations of going to the Eurovision song contest. If you don’t know anything about Eurovision, like most Americans, just imagine European techno-pop, crazy costumes, and some pyrotechnics. Now that we have that out of the way, you will know to look at that as the truthful part of this film.

If you have watched other Will Farrell movies, you know he takes a subject and adds silly and absurd moments. He always plays it straight like he’s not in on the joke. Director David Dobkin, has done an array of comedies and musical works, so he really got to use all his knowledge here. There are funny moments but it isn’t joke after joke. This movie has some tender moments and to be honest, some real bops–only some with ridiculous lyrics.

One of my favorite parts is a scene with tons of past Eurovision winners. All are amazing and I was glad to see them showing their skills off to possibly a new audience. Farrell and Adams aren’t the only contestants played by non-Eurovision alum. Demi Levato makes an appearance as extremely talented Icelandic pop star Katiana. Dan Stevens shows up as the sexy, over the top Russian contestant.

The film was a tad bit long and could have done without a tiny C-plot. Removing that bit could have possibly changed my rating to a Tupperware. It is a fun, lighthearted movie making it a perfect watch during stressful pandemic days. If you have a Netflix account, check it out.

PCL Rating: High Taste It

Rotten Tomatoes Rating: FRESH 🍅
