“The Circle” Review by Stephanie Chapman

There is a possibility that we have reached a new low in the world of reality television. With shows that test our tolerance for the absurd (i.e. The Bachelor, Love & Hip Hop and Floribama Shore), a new show has emerged with a unique concept that will certainly peak your interest enough to last a few episodes.
“The Circle” is a Netflix reality show (based off of a UK reality show with the same name) hosted by comedian Michelle Buteau. It takes several strangers and houses them in fancy apartments. They never meet and their only interaction is via social media profiles they create themselves. The profiles are uploaded into a social medical platform created by the show called “The Circle” and is accessible via TV’s in their apartments. The goal is to communicate via this platform and to gain allies to remain popular which will allow you to remain on the show. The last person remaining wins.
The show tackles some pitfalls of social media like, catfishing (one male contestant uses his girlfriend’s photo for his profile in hopes that posing as a female will give him an winning advantage). It also perpetuates stereotypes by casting individuals who will feed into preconceived notions about certain groups.
I found many contestants insufferable while I found myself rooting for others. This show is a great distraction that will not require much thought to understand or enjoy. It does however provide audiences with a mind-numbing viewing experience that could be easily duplicated in a second season (not saying it needs one). It serves its purpose and will likely develop a following similar one the UK version gained after it’s 2017 debut. Audiences that don’t expect too much from “The Circle” certainly will not be disappointed.
